She continues her professional knowledge of beading and jewelry making by yearly attending the Bead and Button Show in Milwaukee, WI, subscribing and contributing to several leading beading and jewelry making magazines, and networking with several other leading designers.

Cortina Barnes on Military Mom Talk Radio

Cortina Barnes, was elected National President of the Ladies Auxiliary to the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States at its 97th National Convention in Indianapolis, Indiana, on August 26, 2010.  The theme for the 2010-2011 year is United by Love for Our Veterans and Country. Cortina plans to focus attention on the Auxiliary’s core programs for veterans and their families. She also hopes to lead members in topping donations to the Cancer Aid & Research Fund at more than $3 million to assist members with cancer and fund important research to fight this disease.

A life member of Woodbridge Auxiliary #9755 in Washington, D.C., she is eligible through her father, Benjamin F. Willis, who served in the United States Army from 1944-1946 in the European Theater. Barnes was employed with the federal government for 32 years. She worked with the Department of Defense Human Resources Activity outside of Washington, D.C., as a Resource Manager and is a Certified Defense Financial Manager. She received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Duquesne University in Pittsburgh, Pa. She is a life member of the VFW National Home for Children, a member of Sodality of Our Lady at St. Francis de Sales Church, American Society of Military Comptrollers and the Military Order of the Cooties Auxiliary (MOCA).

Author Betsy Beard visits Military Mom Talk Radio

As the surviving mom of SPC Bradley Beard, who was killed in action in Iraq, Betsy Beard has been associated with TAPS since 2004, first as a survivor requesting a Peer Mentor and then as a participant in the National Survivor Seminar. Betsy became a TAPS Peer Mentor in May of 2005 after attending Peer Mentor Training. She began to write extensively in 2005 and has published articles in TAPS Magazine, Living with Loss Magazine, and Hospice Foundation of America’s 2008 Living with Grief.
Betsy is the editor for the national quarterly TAPS Magazine. She also assists with the writing of various other TAPS publications including the award-winning children’s book, Klinger, A Story of Honor and Hope.

Betsy has served as a support group facilitator and workshop presenter at TAPS regional and national seminars and currently co-facilitates the Raleigh, North Carolina TAPS Care Group. She has presented workshops on bereavement for the Department of Veterans Affairs’ Regional and National Trainings and participated in the Casualty Notification training for the United States Army Casualty and Mortuary Affairs Operation Center (CMAOC).

Prior to the death of her son, Betsy worked in the banking industry, home-schooled her children through high school, and spent 21 years working in hospital laboratories as a Medical Laboratory Technologist.
