Sherri L. Brown joined the American Red Cross as Senior Vice President for Service to the Armed Forces on August 18, 2008. Sherri brings top-level executive experience from the U.S. Government and extensive knowledge of the military having served in both active duty and reserves of the United States Coast Guard.
Joining the Internal Revenue Service in 2001, Sherri held several positions to include Director of Examination Policy, Director of Examination Operations Support and most recently Deputy Chief of Staff. Sherri’s accomplishments included development of the IRS’ five-year Strategic Plan and a national Return Preparer Strategy in collaboration with tax leaders from around the country. She was also instrumental in developing legislative change proposals to help reduce the “Tax Gap” – the difference between what taxpayers owe and what is actually paid. As the Director of Examination Operations Support, Sherri was responsible for nationwide liaison activities between the Field and Headquarters operations and oversight of the budget, hiring, training, and performance reporting for 6,000 field auditors.
Sherri began her career as an active duty officer in the United States Coast Guard. Her work with the Coast Guard included port operations, port safety and security, and strategic planning for the Marine Safety Directorate. After leaving active duty, Sherri worked for P&O Containers, Ltd., where she developed loading plans for ships along the coast of the United States and in foreign ports of call.
As an active member of the Coast Guard Reserve, Sherri currently serves as a legal officer in Norfolk, Virginia, during her weekend drill duty. She has also served as a reservist at the U. S. Coast Guard Marine Safety Office/Group Philadelphia, the Office of Military Justice/Physical Disability Evaluation System at Coast Guard Headquarters in Washington, DC, Coast Guard Legal and Defense Services in Arlington, Virginia, and the Maritime Intelligence Fusion Center Atlantic in Virginia Beach, Virginia.
Sherri is originally from Delaware and maintains close family ties there. She graduated from the United States Merchant Marine Academy with a Bachelor of Science degree in Marine Transportation and received her Juris Doctorate degree from the George Washington University Law School.
