Growing up in a family of six kids in Clovis, New Mexico, home of Cannon Air Force Base and the Santa Fe Railroad, I spent countless hours in a rocking chair, daydreaming about what it would be like to be someone else. Little did I know then that I was simply creating stories in my head. Then one day I learned that I could write them down.

Through my writing, I’ve been able to explore many subjects. My goal is always to get to the truth through the people and places I write about, real or imagined. Along the way, I’ve encountered many roadblocks and detours, but I’ve pressed ahead and kept my eyes on the goals I mapped out years ago.

My work has appeared in Family Circle Magazine, Air Force, Army & Navy Times, Family: The Magazine for Military Families, Fort Worth Star-Telegram, Albuquerque Journal, Clovis News Journal, and in three anthologies: “Because I Fly,” by McGraw-Hill, “Lessons From Our Children,” by Health Communications, Inc. and “Hearts of Steel,” by Military Writers Society of America.

In 2008, Leatherneck Publishing released my debut novel “The Final Salute.” The following year, Army Wife Network selected it as their July 2009 book club pick and Military Writers Society of America awarded it the Silver Medal. In July 2011, the Kindle Edition was released by Navigator Books.

I am the mother of two grown sons, Thomas (an award-winning artist) and J.P. (a 2nd Lieutenant in the US Army).  I live in Colleyville, TX, with my husband, Tom, a retired fighter pilot, and my Chocolate Lab, Bubba.

Falling in…she who laughs last…by Sandra Beck, Powered Up Talk Radio

Sandra Beck falls into her mother's grave.

Sandra Beck falls into her mother’s grave.

by Sandra Beck, Powered Up Talk Radio

My mom died last year after a long battle with breast cancer. She was my best friend. She was my hero and she had the funniest darn sense of humour that only a mom who watched letterman at 70 and challenged her grandson to dive into the lake then bellyflopped herself can have. So during the ceremony I was talking about my mom…standing over the grave and you guessed it by the photo stepped right in it! As women with little brother’s know, mine was johnny on the spot ready to snap this memorable picture.

I was so sad going to the cemetary. I felt sick, confused, in shock and like i walk walking in a dream or nightmare I couldn’t tell. It was another reality for sure. Leave it to my mom. I really think she was pulling my leg – literally from beyond. Not in a scary movie kind of way, but I took that as her message to me that she didn’t want me to be sad. She wanted me to be “the little sandra sunshine” that she loved so much.

So yes. I am an adult mother who fell into my own mother’s grave. I put this picture up to show that death can be funny – which is usually reserved to cops, journalists, doctors and mortuary owners. So when you think of this picture think about how my mom came back from beyond to pull my leg, make me laugh and put the joy back into a very sad day. Becuase even on our darkest days, there is always something to smile about. Even if its that you’re glad it wasn’t you…

Sandra Beck is the host of Poweredup Talk Radio. She is the single mom of two small boys. She wants everyone to stop out breast cancer.
