Home Office Storage

Storage is usually a problem for most people working from their home, but it really doesn’t need to be.

First off, are you keeping a lot of unnecessary things? Tax returns from 20 years ago, magazines you know you’ll never read, and so on? If so, it’s time to purge your office area.

Get creative when it comes to storage. Yes, you may want to keep important papers in an actual filing cabinet or box so that they’ll be easy to access, but for other things, use your imagination. Shoeboxes can be used for computer disks, empty jars for office supplies.

Empty wall space is just wasted space. Install shelves or purchase a tall shelving unit. Use attractive boxes or baskets so that they don’t look cluttered.

Outsourcing Creativity

You know I love my Oprah.  In this month’s issue of O! she had a lovely interview with best selling author, Daniel Pink.  Their main topic?  Pink’s new book, A Whole New Mind: Why Right-Brainers Will Rule the Future.  Being left handed, in my RIGHT mind and a creative/conceptual person I completely agree with Pink’s premise.

What I was shocked to see was Pink’s statment that you cannot “outsource creativity.”  Clearly he has not hired a virtual assistant from Motherhood Incorporated.  While it’s true that we do handle all the “left brained” activities that any business might be looking to outsource, such as accounting, proofreading, database entry, etc, etc… We also specialize in a wide array of creative services and conceptual problem solving.

Maybe you can’t effectively outsource creativity to India, but you can outsource it with outstanding results to American Moms who have left the traditional workplace in order to pursue their careers from home.

I’m not holding it against Daniel Pink that he didn’t know how to outsource creativity. He admits to being a left brained thinker himself, so the conceptual idea of having a team of creative experts at your disposal hasn’t occurred to him yet.  That’s why we right brained business people need to provide the less fortunate “other half” with this important info.

Realtors Blogging

By Shannon Penrod

Being a successful realtor means understanding and mastering the art of self promotion.  In the twenty first century self promotion has risen to new technological heights.  Now you simply must have a strong web presence or you will miss millions of dollars worth of business.  However, it is no longer enough to simply have a beautiful website (even a fresh interactive 2.0) now in order to compete you have to have a blog.

Yesterday Sandra Beck and I lead a Social Networking Seminar for Steve Shull and The Hundred Day Challenge on the NING Network.  Steve is a superlative real estate coach for Performance Coaching, he so passionately believes in the power of blogging and social networking in a successful realtor’s business that he asked us to make an appearance on behalf of Motherhood Incorporated.

What was interesting about the event to me was how defeatist some of the realtors were.  When we explained what a blog can do for your business, one woman said that she didn’t have the time and that is sounded like she would have to answer a lot more email.

We explained that Motherhood Incorporated offers services that can help streamline your blogging time, everything from setting up your blogs, uploading pictures, writing bios and meta tags, to help with naming your blog, writing your blog, tagging your blog and performing SEO on your blog.  We even offer a service that monitors comments for you and makes you aware when leads come in via the comment section.

What we discovered was that many of the Realtors were spending huge amounts of time on tasks that had no apparent cash value to them.  The realtor that didn’t want to do a blog because it required answering too much email was sending out a weekly newsletter and then answering questions on a one by one basis, answering the same question over and over again.  Talk about sucking the life out of your business!

The bottom line is that Realtors need to stay abreast of the technological advances, anyone who blogs properly can see the results fairly quickly.  If you want to move at the speed of current business, you need to blog properly, but you don’t need to spend a lot of time figuring it out and having a trial by fire.  There are services that are designed just for realtors so you can create a tremendous web presence for a small amount of a time and a small investment.  The great thing is that is frees you up to do the things that you do best, which is meet with clients and sell homes.

Late night makeovers and StumbleUpon.com by Tia Peterson/All American Admin

I think it’s so funny that Sandra just recently posted about getting a lovely long night of sleep, because it’s after midnight at the moment (on the East Coast) and I’m still awake, day-dreaming of sleep…

I just gave my company website a quick makeover. Not in terms of design or personality, but in content. I was finally able to streamline what I do into something I can “talk about at parties” (that was a nod to Jack Nicholson’s monologue in A Few Good Men…)

Seriously, though, I was able to spend some time while my son is down for (half) the night refining and describing my service offering in a way that finally makes sense. Being a virtual assistant is a wonderous and mysterious thing: people love what you do while at the same time not quite understanding what you do, no matter how many times you explain it.

On a totally different note, I want to brag that I was the first to “discover” Motherhood Incorporated and the Mother Incoporated blog on StumbleUpon. If you don’t know what StumbleUpon is, you should find out soon.

The main reason is that you should at least look to see whether someone has already discovered your site (it makes you feel good) and secondly you should know whether you’re getting thumbs ups or thumbs down – because your approval isn’t warranted with StumbleUpon. Your website could be getting rated and you wouldn’t be the wiser unless you are part of the StumbleUpon community.

It’s really a website ratings tool – people involved in StumbleUpon spend time “stumbling” websites that are presented to them based on a set of preferences. Then, we give the site a thumbs up or thumbs down. The more thumbs up a site is given, the more it is presented, thereby increasing the daily hits to that site exponentially.

If that kind of thing strikes your fancy, I say give it a try. I like it so far, but I caution against spending too much time “stumbling” – it’s very addictive!

Ciao,

Tia
