That’s Entertainment! Money-saving Tips By Sandra Beck, Motherhood Incorporated

By Sandra Beck, Motherhood Incorporated

• Wait until the last minute to get your performance tickets. You can get them for a discounted price if your plans are flexible.
• Visit your local library for DVDs – no rental fees that way! Also check out library events such as book clubs if you are looking for something free to do.
• Volunteer – if you volunteer at a theater, you may be able to sit in on performances for free. This may not be easy, especially if you have young children but it’s something to think about.
• Look for discounts at zoos, museums, etc. Some places offer free admission days certain days of the month.
• Team up with a relative, friend or neighbor for baby-sitting. If they watch your kids on certain night, then you watch theirs on another night. Think of the money you will save by helping each other out.
• If you want to go to the movies or theater for a show, try to go to a matinee showing if possible as they are cheaper for everyone.
• Go as a group to events to get a discount- usually 10%, but sometimes more- ask friends, relatives or co-workers to attend with you and your kids and you will save some money for everybody. They say “the more the merrier” – in this case it really is true.
• Use your membership to clubs such as AAA to get discounts on tickets and events. Your job or former college may offer discounts as well.

Travel Tips By Sandra Beck, Motherhood Incorporated

• Don’t go during peak travel seasons; wait and go in the off-season when places are less busy. This way you will save money, too. If your favorite vacation spot is busiest in the summer, go in fall, winter or spring.
• Don’t spend lots of time browsing the web for deals on airfare and hotels. Instead go to www.kayak.com which does all the work for you- searching around 140 travel sites for the best deals.
• If possible book a package deal. You can save money even if you are traveling at the last-minute.
• Stay closer to home. This way you don’t have to spend lots of money on airfare. You might even check out sites in your hometown.
• Try to get a better deal on an independently run hotel. Ask for a free night if you plan to stay an extra night or see what other deals they offer. They are more likely to do this since national chains get more exposure than the smaller hotels.
• You can stay at a camp site if you are looking for adventure. If you are looking for a specific camp site with a certain view, visit www.recreation.gov
• Book your travel through www.hotwire.com or www.priceline.com which offers airfare and hotel rates.
There are just a few trips to help you if you are wanting to travel but want to save some money.

Tips To Save on Almost Anything By Sandra Beck, Motherhood Incorporated

By Sandra Beck, Motherhood Incorporated
Below are three categories where you can save money.
Investing- Get a 401(k) and you will save even more money if your employer matches your contributions in the company’s plan. Open a Roth IRA. Invest a certain amount at regular intervals when buying stocks and also know when to sell your stocks.
Food- Cook your meals when you can since eating out costs so much especially if you do so several times a week. It doesn’t mean that you can’t eat out, it just means you don’t eat out as often as you used to. You can also get a tour book for your city or eat cheaper, too. Coupons are great not just at the grocery store but at restaurants too. Visit www.retailmenot.com for coupons and codes before you dine out.
You can save money by going to the grocery store once a week instead of three or four times per week. You’ll save time, money and you’ll also be less like to make impulse purchases. Make a list for the week’s meals and ingredients you will need and stick to the list. You’ll get out of the store quicker that way.
Transportation- Buy a used car to save money. You can buy a car that has good gas mileage; you don’t have to buy a hybrid in order to do so. To find the best gas prices, visit www.gasbuddy.com

Money Saving Tips by Sandra Beck, Motherhood Incorporated

By Sandra Beck, Motherhood Incorporated
As a single mom with two young kids, spending habits have to change. Look at the type of spending habits you have. If you are a compulsive buyer, try making lists of the things you need at the store and stick to those lists. What are some other things you can do? If you buy designer clothes for your kids, consider buying them at a discount store like Wal-Mart instead. The clothes will still be great, and as long as they look decent, they shouldn’t care too much.
As far as mealtimes go, pack your kids lunches. If you can bring some of your work home and make dinner, you will save some money that way, too.
Bring your kids with you to more places so you save on baby-sitting costs. If you have a YMCA membership, you can exercise while your kids meet other kids in the free daycare that’s offered. My gym www.24hourfitness.com offers babysitting for 2 hours for a $2 so at $1 per hour that’s a steal. I use this time to work out – sometimes I sit in the yoga area and read…or I take a shower and deep condition my hair which is heavenly without two little boys slipping around the shower with me. I can even shave my legs without hollering – no don’t touch that it’s sharp!
Next time you go to the grocery store, buy more of the off-brand items and try to cut back on the soda that you buy and drink water instead. Don’t be afraid to cut out coupons and use them. Find out if your local grocery store has a double coupon day and make that the day you do your grocery shopping if possible.
Take your kids to the library to get books and movies. This make sense because you usually only read a book once or watch a movie once or twice. You also save on the movie rental fee.

Holiday Shopping Tips By Sandra Beck, Motherhood Incorporated

By Sandra Beck, Motherhood Incorporated

The holidays are fast-approaching so here are some tips for you as a single mom:

Shop online and start early, especially since you don’t know how long items may take to ship. I find that making a list and heading to www.amazon.com and taking advantage of their free shipping to be helpful. I also have a credit card with www.llbean.com and find that using it for free shipping, no sales tax (for California) and free monogramming a great way to give useful and monogrammed gifts.

Spend your money wisely. Be sure not to go crazy with the clicks of your mouse. I set a budget for each person – including tax and shipping.

Shop the clearance section of the web site.  You don’t know what you may find and you will save money at the same time.

Take the time to look for online coupons and other promotions. It’s about getting the most for the money.

Usually you can get free shipping if you spend the most money in one store or online store so try to get the most gifts at one place so you qualify for free shipping or other promotions if possible.

However, remember that if you only want one or two items, it would be cheaper to go directly to the store- that is if you don’t mind spending the gas and time to get there as well as possibly fighting crowds.

Keep a positive attitude during this season when you are shopping. Try not to let the crowds, traffic and overall chaos upset you. You can shop from the comfort of your home and save time by shopping online.  Good luck and may your dollar stretch beyond your wildest dreams.

As a single mom, are you looking for an all-inclusive resource that will provide you with articles and tips on various topics related to single moms and their kids? SingleMom.com (www.singlemom.com) is the site you have been searching for. It provides tips and resources on a variety of topics including:

Education & Career- financial aid and scholarships, articles and tips and employment resources
Help For Moms In Need- basic needs resources and drug and health care programs
Housing – housing programs and owning a home
Finances- resources and articles and monthly advice
Parenting – advice and resources
Day To Day – articles and tips

Legal Issues- Information including child custody and domestic violence and victim assistance

A lot of the information on this site is particularly helpful late at night – when you are totally worn out and trying to get everything done – yet spending time surfing the web for new ideas.  It is totally overwhelming at times – trying to be both mother and father…and trying to provide for your kids the same way a dual couple would.  But, with two hands and two incomes – it is very hard – and sometimes demoralizing for a single mom to keep up.   Though there are no races and no competitions – it can and continues to be a challenge for every single mom out there.

The above is a complete list of topics, but only a partial list of the sub topics under each topic. For more resources you may also want to visit www.singlemotherresources.com .
